about me:

Picture
I have had a love of music from a very young age.  My experience with the violin, however, started at the age of 4 when I saw my Aunt practicing during an over night visit with her.  After coming home and mimicking my Aunt by holding my Daddy's ukulele under my chin as if it were a violin for several days and air bowing with my right arm, my Mother decided she would sign me up for private violin lessons.  I started off at the J. Graham Brown School with Suzuki violin instructor Jim Bates, first using cracker jack boxes as violins while learning proper posturing, resting and playing position, then eventually we moved up to actual violins.  At that time I moved on to take lessons at the University School of Music under Suzuki violin instructor Sherry Hoffmeister where I took lessons up through highschool.  Along the way I also took private viola lessons, which I played for about 2 years, dabbled with the cello, saxaphone, guitar, and also piano.

Since then, I have traveled to Rome Italy, seeing places such as the Vatican, the Crypt of the Capuchin, the Colosseum, Napoli Island, Pompeii, Athens Greece, vacationed in the Caribbeans, and take annual vacations with my family to the east coast.  In addition to becoming a devoted wife and loving mother of 4 boys, and one girl, I love Yoga, and have continued to stay involved with the arts.  I have created and ran the Creative Energy Poetry Group, maintaining other involvements with poetry and creative writing, and became a docent at the JB Speed Museum in Louisville Kentucky, through the Student Ambassador Program at Jefferson Community and Technical Colleges in 2007.
After years of being a free spirit, self discovery and taking college classes just for fun, I was inspired to seriously pursue my degree, and graduated with my BA in Sociology  from Simmons College of Kentucky, the countries 107th official HBCU, in the Fall of 2019.  I am a current student in the Clinical and Mental Health Counseling Program at Indiana Wesleyan University, pursuing my Masters Degree in Counseling with a concentration in Expressive Arts Therapies. My expected graduation date is in April of 2022. I continue to teach and share my love of music and promote healing through mindfulness, music and art.

I have played in various orchestras, groups  and ensembles, and performed in locations throughout Kentucky and Indiana. I have gained over 25 years of experience with violin having played 1st and 2nd chair in the Louisville Youth Orchestra (LYO), J Graham Brown School Orchestra, Fern Creek Traditional High School Orchestra, and St. Stephens Baptist Church Orchestra. I enjoy sharing my love of strings through teaching and have been teaching professionally out of my home since 2010, and at Moms Music from 2011 through 2012.

I have also developed and ran the Love of Strings (LOS) Suzuki violin program at the Metro Parks Shawnee Arts and Cultural Center since the summer of 2012.  More recently I have evolved the LOS program into what is officially now known as the Nia Strings Violin Program since 2017.

Nia Strings has recently established an official partnership with Magnolia Blossom Montessori School where group lessons are now being offered by Nia Strings to all currently enrolled students as a part of their curriculum!  Private lessons are available after school hours at this location at a monthly rate, by appointment only.

I also am offering group lessons out of the Mizizi Home School Co-op, and Liberated Minds Home School Academy of Louisville, school of Afrikan based studies here in Louisville Kentucky.  I plan to see Nia Strings Violin Program grow into other Schools, Community Centers and churches throughout Kentuckiana and beyond!
